FAQ
What can I expect when I come for a session?
When we first meet, I will do an intake and assessment, during which time I will ask you many questions about what brings you for treatment, and many questions that may seen unrelated to your concerns, but that have relevance for helping me to determine what the best course of treatment may be. Based on this first session I will recommend a course of treatment.
If you are coming for acupuncture, I will observe you overall, as well as your tongue. I will check your pulses at the radial artery (on the wrists), and palpate specific regions and channels body, assessing temperature, texture, tenderness. The methods of assessment involve Looking, Listening, Asking, and Touching.
Do you work remotely?
Yes! Hypnotherapy sessions, EFT tapping, instruction in meditation and yoga are all offered remotely. For those seeking acupuncture who cannot come in person, tele-medicine sessions include instruction in ways of stimulating the points using acupressure, energetic touch techniques, and visualizations; qi gong instruction to stimulate channels in need of moving or tonifying; counseling - looking at the diet, sleep, habits, emotional states; offering recommendations for nutritional and herbal supplements as indicated; guided meditations that tap into the meridians.
How long do the treatments last?
The first session length varies, but can be between one hour to one hour and 45 minutes, depending on the modality and what the concerns are. Follow up sessions of acupuncture range from one hour to one and a half hours; hypnotherapy, EFT tapping, meditation and yoga sessions are one hour; hypnopuncture sessions are one and a half hours.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatment any given person needs varies from person to person. That said, for most people, and most conditions, with acupuncture, I recommend coming for at least six treatments in order to determine whether the treatments are effective. Some people experience significant relief after just a single treatment. However, generally receiving consistent treatments over a period of time is more beneficial for seeing that the effects of the treatments remain over time. For hypnosis and tapping therapy, I recommend a minimum of three sessions to have a sense of the process and it’s resonance, and then a series of additional sessions may be recommended.
How frequently do I need to come for treatment?
The frequency of treatments needed also varies from person to person, and according to the type of treatment given. For acupuncture, in general, acute conditions benefit from more frequent, closely scheduled appointments (2-3 times per week), for a period of 2-3 weeks, after which time the appointments may be more spaced out. For many chronic conditions, treating twice or even once a week is sufficient. For hypnotherapy, sessions are recommended either weekly, or every two weeks, depending on what is being worked through. When you come for your initial assessment, I will be able to tell you the frequency of appointments recommended for your specific case. Once your primary complaint resolves, you can opt to space out treatments, for example, shifting from every week to once every two weeks, to once a month as a preventative medicine check in / check up. You may also opt to stop coming for treatments once your chief complaint has resolved.
Does getting acupuncture hurt?
If you have not received acupuncture before, this is a very understandable question! Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and while you may feel an initial pinch when the needles are inserted and pass through the superficial layer of the skin, after that the sensation is generally more a mild achy, tingly, expanding, traveling sensation.
Will I give up my power to decide for myself during hypnosis?
This is such an understandable question, especially given how misrepresented hypnosis has been in the media and collective culture. Quite contrary to giving up your power, hypnosis is such a potent practice for empowering you to have greater awareness of what really drives you, of what you most deeply long for, of what matters most to you, of what you are capable of, of who you really are, beyond the limited and limiting ideas and beliefs that may be keeping you stuck in the very patterns you’ve come to treatment to address. Hypnosis is saying - here, sit in the driver’s seat - let’s see where your unconscious takes us.
I’ve watched YouTube videos about EFT / Tapping. Why should I come see you? Can’t I just learn it on YouTube?
YouTube is such a great resource! There is so much we can learn on YouTube. Including tapping. AND - just as you wouldn’t think that learning exercises from a YouTube video would be the same as going to a physical therapist who knows your history and your body in detailed and specific ways, who has been in your physical presence and can offer you guidance and feedback that is unique to your situation, the very same applies for EFT tapping. The online videos and apps are wonderful. And, it’s an entirely different experience altogether to work with someone who has heard your story, who has listened to what you’ve said, and what you haven’t said, and who is skilled in using tapping therapeutically with others one-on-one.
What should I expect to feel during an acupuncture treatment?
What a person may experience during an acupuncture treatment varies greatly. Most often, people feel a general sense of overall relaxation. One of the non-specific effects of acupuncture needling is the promotion of the release of endorphins - the body’s natural pain-killers and feel-good chemicals. So often, people feel a ‘buzz,’ or like they are in a relaxed or meditative state. Some people don’t feel too much during the actual treatment, but feel the effects after they get off the table, or more often, over the next few days.
Do you accept insurance?
For acupuncture, I am an out-of-network provider and can provide you with a bill to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. If you have an HSA or FSA, I will provide you with the necessary paperwork/receipts.
